Existence can be classified into four states :-

– The sleep state (when you are in deep sleep at night)
– The dream state (akin to when you are dreaming while sleeping)
– The waking dream state (when you are lost in the mind while being physically awake)
– The conscious state (when there is a space of awareness, and you are not totally lost in the mind when you are awake)

The conscious state is a highly intelligent state of being because there is the presence of a deeper wisdom that comes from the space of awareness – it’s like being connected to the wisdom of life/universal consciousness.

This space of awareness creates a gap in the constant noise of the thinking mind and thus allows for intelligent response instead of an unconscious “reaction”. As this awareness keeps becoming stronger, it puts you in a place of stability, where you are able to see through the various dysfunctional/negative thought patterns in the brain and thus “transform” it or dissolve it.

Freedom through Awareness

Awareness can transform our consciousness and free us from the source of dis-ease that affects the mind. Whenever our consciousness becomes overly fixated with a thing, like watching TV, playing computer games, worrying about life, emotional or physical pain pleasure, it dominates us and we loose awareness. Awareness is not focussed on a single thing we that we experience, but is like the space that surrounds a thing in which it appears – a spacious field. Every experience appears within a context. For example your chair is in a room, the room is in a building, the building is on some land and on and on. Awareness is more like the space that surrounds us and all things we are conscious of yet it is not the same as the thing within.

Transforming our ordinary consciousness to awareness first of all means becomming aware of this space surrounding both – the outer and the inner – that is around us and the things we observe and that which surrounds our thoughts, feelings and emotions. Enhancing our awareness of this space – both inner and outer – and realizing it as a vast field of spacious awareness frees us from being dominated by any thought, feeling or sensation that arises within it. When we are able to identify with this spacious awareness field then we can acknowledge and accept everything that arises in it – pleasant or unpleasant – and at the same time prevent our consciousness from being stuck, focused or fixated on any one thing.

It then gives us another choice. Whether to identify with the things we are conscious of or to identify with the spacious field of awareness in which they appear, which will automatically free our consciousness from domination by any of its contents. By realizing that our awareness of things is not a thing itself we see that our awareness of thoughts, feelings, and impulses is not itself a thought, feeling or sensation. This leads us to true freedom!

Beyond the mind, beyond thought, beyond feeling, there is a beautiful timeless place where all is known!

Lao Tzu’s poetic text ‘Tao Te Ching’ is built around the concept of ‘spaciousness’. One of the example that he uses is that of the space within the pot – we do not actually use the clay of the pot, rather the clay creates a useable space in which we can put what we like. Similar is the case of a house. We do not live in the materials that that the house is constructed with (walls, door etc) but rather we live in the space created by the materials. This spaciousness is what allows for everything in existence to be possible.

Our true self is this birthless, deathless, timeless, limitless, eternal spaciousness. It’s been said that the mind is like a pond. When the concentration is on one object, it is as if one throws a single stone into the water and you observe beautiful rings expanding out from one point on a smooth surface. When there are a multitude of thoughts, it is like many stones hitting the surface of the lake, and ripples are going all over, running into each other, making any sort of clear reflection off the surface of the water impossible. Similarly, when the mind is full of thoughts it is impossible for any deep awareness to manifest, or any deeper reflection about oneself to take place. And this is the way the mind exists most of the time. In that condition, all we can do is attend to one thought before another breaks through, whether we like it or not. Thus, we are continuously forced to deal with the constant agitation of the mind, as if it is pulled by our senses, desires, goals, dreams, attachments, aversions, or attempts to serve the demands of others. In such a situation there is hardly any peace nor can we experience our true self. Not only can multiple demands on our life lead to a sense of stress and overwhelm us physically, but it can also feel unsustainable and hopeless emotionally.

What is often helpful is to seek the larger landscape which can hold one’s experience. A spacious mindfulness practice can benefit a sense of larger perspective, a bigger picture, an openness that often can soothe the mind and calm the heart. And even if the practice does not completely do this every single time, it may do it enough so that we can be present one more moment, one more hour, one more day — to allow the boundless qualities of Life to arise and remind us that a clear mind and open heart are possible even in the most difficult circumstances.

One of the classic images used to express this is a storming bull that is caught in the confines of a very small barn. What happens as the animal rages and bucks against the narrow walls of its prison? Likely, it will both destroy the barn and deeply injure itself. However, place the bull in the space of an open field with no obstacles or boundaries; its energies will surely be vented, and its forces also will also exhaust and calm themselves over time. Our minds and hearts are similar. Placing our minds and hearts within a larger landscape allows whatever to arise to be held with mindfulness. The broader the picture we have of our life, the more space we have to maneuver any difficulties that arise and to tend and care for all of the multiple joys and sorrows that come our way. This kind of spacious open awareness does not repress, deny, or change the experience of the mind. It simply gives the mind room to breathe, relax and come into its fullest potential — to be kind, clear and free and at perfect peace.

The Invitation

When God comes in your house
it is only by your invitation,
but even your invitation is God’s,
for she has always been
landlady and tenant,
windows and walls,
the fire in your hearth
and the cold wind blowing at your door.

At first, her visits seem so welcome.
She brings tea and cookies and loves you
so sweetly inside your own heart.
You keep inviting her back
by your prayers and meditations,
imagining you’ve found the one you always wanted
who will hold you on her endless lap
and take away your pain forever.

But pretty soon, she starts arriving
unexpectedly, at odd hours of the day and night,
and every time she comes,
she takes something away–
a pretty picture here, a bookcase there,
maybe even some trash
you are happy to be rid of
in your basement.

But at some point, it occurs to you
she intends to move in completely.
And now the mind starts backing up:
“Perhaps you could come back another day,
after I’ve worked on my house,
after I’ve bought nicer furniture,
after I’ve finished my fight with evil,
after I’ve planted a peace garden.”

But you must know
that if you invite God in,
sooner or later she will set up house,
and when she does, beware;
for she tosses out every single thing
she does not need, which,
in the case of the personality,
is every single thing you thought you were.

Every thought and cherished belief
she just throws out on the garbage heap;
and that might be fine if she replaced them,
but she never replaces those sacred thoughts;
she utterly destroys them. She strips the coverings
off the walls, and peels the paper from the window glass,
opens the door to invite in the wind,
and every creature you wanted kept out.

Sometimes she cleans your house gently,
dismantling it room by room.
But often, she just comes in with a torch,
and you feel in your gut the fire burn
in the center of your separate comfort,
and you watch the contents of your house
melt and turn to ash,
and the roof blow off.

And just when you think
there is nothing more that she could take,
she opens the ground beneath
the barely intact shell of your house,
and all the levels of your being
fall into the space that has no name;
and you are left alone in all the world,
without a map, without a path, without a point of view.

And at this point,
what you are inside your house
is simply What is looking out.
Nothing’s left but what is looking,
yet everything you see is you.

And strange as it seems
to the mind of your memory,
you enjoy each dance of yourself,
even the pains you hoped to be rid of,
you experience fully without regret.
For everywhere your eye may look,
all it sees is infinite love
displaying itself in creation.

And just to be completely honest,
there are times you might be tempted
to rebuild your house of concepts,
for the mind just loves to think;
but the fire of Truth resides within you,
where it always lived before you knew,
and it keeps revealing moment to moment
what is false and what is true.

So what can be said about what happens
when God takes over her house?
She laughs and simply sips her tea,
washes her dishes and sleeps when it’s time,
then goes to find another house
where there has been an invitation,
an invitation to come in
from the deep, deep love of Herself.

Awareness, the I of all I’s

It is our common experience to note that we have numerous ‘I’s. The I of I want, the I of I sang a song, the I of I am an engineer, or I am thinking. But beyond desires, actiivities and physical characteristics there is another I that is basic. This I gives rise to the subjective sense of our existence like our self image, physical charecteristics, emotions and social category. When we speak about the self it is these categories that we refer to but they are not the origin of our sense of personal existence. The most basic I is something different.

As we introspect deeper to find the origin of our subjectivity we find that the search for I leaves the regular ideas of personhood behind and takes us closer to awareness. Awareness is something apart from, and different from, all that of which we are aware – thoughts, emotions, images, sensations, desires and memory. Awareness is the ground in which the mind’s contents manifest themselves; they appear in it and disappear once again. The objects of awareness — sensations, thoughts, memories, images and emotions — are constantly changing and superseding each other. In contrast, awareness continues independent of any specific mental contents.

Awareness cannot itself be observed, it is not an object, not a thing. Indeed, it is featureless, lacking form, texture, color, spatial dimensions. These characteristics indicate that awareness is of a different nature than the contents of the mind; it goes beyond sensation, emotions, ideation, memory. Awareness is at a different level, it is prior to contents, more fundamental. Awareness has no intrinsic content, no form, no surface characteristics — it is unlike everything else we experience, unlike objects, sensations, emotions, thoughts, or memories.

A group of travelers forded a river. Afterwards, to make sure everyone had crossed safely, the leader counted the group but omitted himself from the count. Each member did the same and they arrived at the conclusion that one of them was missing. The group then spent many unhappy hours searching the river until, finally, a passerby suggested that each person count their own self, as well. The travelers were overjoyed to find that no one was missing and all proceeded on their way.

Like the travellers, we often neglect to notice the one that counts. Until we do it we do not know our true self the timeless and eternal awareness we are.

In such a situation, where is there any peace?

So the basis of meditation is to reach a state of being free from this agitation, to calm the mind, like allowing the surface of the pond to become smooth after stopping the throwing of any stones into it. Then once the surface becomes smooth, we can begin to see the reflection on the surface of our Self, our true nature of sat-chit-ananda, eternity, full knowledge and bliss. However, the real goal of meditation is to not only see the reflection, but to go deep enough wherein we make direct contact with our real, spiritual identity. Steady contact with the Self is not only meditation but becomes samadhi, an uninterrupted absorption in our real constitutional position of being a spiritual being, jivatma. Then we actually begin to enter into that higher and eternal awareness of who and what we are and where we are going in this life.

Burn my mind, o my breath;
Empty all the forgotten
channels of my mind: they will
be filled up with new life.

The void you left behind
is guiding me into
the darkest and most feared
places of my mind, where all
my certainties disintegrate
and my imagination is of no help.

Burn my mind, o my breath;
Your regenerating blows
have the power to move
the dead loads of this
now living channel of my mind;
your new air is bringing
my past times and future hopes
as gifts for a present moment
so hungry for life.

Burn my mind, o my breath;
The vital and deadly dance
of your blows, are reviving
and extinguishing this great fire
that has no light; at your pace
my emotions fade away and arise,
and as soon as a thought is born
it starts to die; along your blows
of death – as words – these thoughts
find another life.

Burn my mind, o my breath;
This complete darkness of my mind
– so discredited by my rationality -
only shows me the pale reflections
of the colours of the world,

Here, among the black flames of
my mind, at each moment, a new search
for light restarts: passing through
my eyes and animating my body,
it never will stop.
