Jesus, The Revolutionary

27 Oct

The disciples said to Jesus: Tell us what the Kingdom of heaven is like.

He said to them: It is like a mustard seed – smaller than all seeds, but when it falls on the tilled earth it produces a large tree and becomes a shelter for all the birds of heaven.

Jesus was initiating a revolution. Not a revolution of this world but a revolution of the inner world. He was training his disciples for this but they were unable to comprehend. Hence the disciples ask Jesus, “Tell us what the Kingdom of heaven is like. Tell is in such a manner that we can understand it. We don’t know, we have no experience. Enlighten us so that we can have a glimpse.

Jesus uses the parable of the mustard seed to enlighten them. The mustard seed is the smallest thing visible. Smaller to that is invisible. It is not only the smallest but it has the capability of becoming the biggest of plants. The seed is the smallest but the plant is the biggest. The seed is almost invisible but the plant is the most visible. The Kingdom of God is the seed. The universe is the plant. The seed is the smallest but it contains the biggest. The Kingdom of God is the unmanifest.  The universe is the manifest. No one can see the Kingdom of heaven because it is the smallest but you can see the universe. In order for the seed to become a tree it has to die. This is how you can enter the kingdom of heaven. If you are looking for it somewhere else it is in vain. If you want to see the Kingdom of heaven you have to die like the seed. You are no more and God is there. When you disappear, God is there.

The seed contains the tree but the seed can also kill the tree. If the seed becomes afraid of death then the very covering will become the prison, the very shell that was protecting the tree before it is sowed in the right soil will prevent the tree from growing and will cause its death. Jesus is telling the disciples that they are the seeds which have become prisons.

Just the death of the seeds is not enough. It has to be sowed in the right soil. That is the meaning of discipleship. It is the training to become the right soil. You are the mustard seed. Be ready to die. Prepare for your death. There will be fear and apprehension. The jump is going to be difficult. The seed cannot know the tree that is the problem. The seed wants the guarantee that if it dies it will become a tree. No guarantee can be given. The seed wants to be certain that when it is not there the tree will be there. How can this guarantee be given? Even if it is given the seed to whom it is given will not be there.

This is the absurdity of faith. You want to be certain but what certainty is there that when the seed is no longer, the tree will be there? No guarantee is possible. The seed can die only in deep trust that the tree will be born. The seed has to die trusting in the unknown that it will happen. You are the seeds – the possibilities of the Kingdom. Get ready to die because it is the only way to be reborn. Drop the mind, body, ego and identity. Then you will observe something new grow in you. You will become spiritually pregnant. The invisible will become visible to and in you.

God Bless.
